Trying to find French Toast in Tsim Sha Tsui on a Friday evening is way more difficult than I thought! There are loads of restaurants in TST but almost every one that I walked by were serving non-HK dishes, banquet restaurants, or simple noodle places, they might have served French Toast but I didn’t see it on the menus plastered on the store fronts. After walking around for what felt like hours (probably just 40mins) I happened on Yuen Kee on Kimberley Road, not to be confused to Yuen Kee on Granville Road, apparently there are two, and they did indeed serve French Toast. Literally no French Toast all along Chatham Road South (from Canton Road up to Observatory Road), none along the couple of streets that run north-south off Peking Road and Haiphong Road, and none in East TST beside the Science Museum (towards the walkway to HK Polytechnic and Hung Hom,) I know the clientele in TST are mainly tourists and office workers so there aren’t many smaller tea restaurants that serve that kind of food but it was kind of sad. On to the review…
If this is how French Toast is done in TST, then maybe it’s a good thing more places don’t serve it there. It was chewy but not crispy, there was barely any egg, and the filling, oh god, the filling was crap! It tasted like almond paste with crunchy bits added to give it a sandy texture, blech. I was pretty sure it was almond paste anyway, it tasted like it, when I asked the staff if it was peanut butter or almond paste they weren’t sure but said that it was probably peanut butter because that is what is usually used. A huge disappointment, I walked around so long with no luck that any average French Toast would blow me away and they manage to mess that up. Give TST a wide berth if you’re on the lookout for French Toast!
Cost: Don’t remember, under 40 I think.
