Man Wah is a chain of tea restaurants (茶餐廳; cha chaan teng) and it’s where French toast is usually served. When I used to work in the Prince Edward area, I’ve walked by their location in Mong Kok many times but never went in because it was always crowded at lunchtime (like everywhere else). My fiancée visited this place with a friend and recommended the french toast, so I decided to give it a go. Since this post, I’ve had it a few times before but didn’t write about it until now.
There are two pictures because I’ve had it twice in the past month, the first was during the lunch rush and the second was during afternoon tea, and no, I didn’t eat them both on the same day, I could but I didn’t. The first one was left alone for a bit, the butter melted and penetrated the cuts (for your convenience, I assume) but for the second I did not wait and used the corner piece of toast (the best bit, in my opinion) and lathered it with buttery goodness. The first slice had golden syrup while the second was topped with condensed milk. The syrup and condensed milk got runnier the longer they sat on the hot toast, the sticky goo oozed into all the nooks and crannies. I also had a nice cup of HK style milk tea (港式奶茶; Lai Cha) with the second one, it offsets the sweetness of the toast.
This is close to the ideal French Toast that I wrote about in episode 1, the bread is thick, and the egg is soaked in but not all the way through, though it could be a bit crispier, the middle piece is pretty mush by the time you get to it if you eat it from the outside in. Some people like that because that piece has soaked up all the butter, grease, and condiments, but not this guy.
Anyway, I’m not a fan of number ratings but I’d give this a solid 8.5/10, it’s great and you won’t be disappointed. Try to get more condiment on it, and have it with the milk tea.
